Three ways I gain perspective:Carmela Martino is an author, speaker, and writing teacher who holds an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults. Her articles, poems, and short stories have been published in newspapers, magazines, and anthologies. She is also the author of two award-winning novels: the middle-grade novel Rosa, Sola (Candlewick Press), based on her experiences growing up in an Italian immigrant family, and the young-adult historical romance Playing by Heart (Vinspire Publishing), inspired by two amazing sisters who lived in 18th-century Milan, one a composer and the other a mathematician. Carmela has taught writing classes for over twenty years, and she blogs about teaching and writing at www.TeachingAuthors.com. For more, see www.carmelamartino.com.
* I take a walk outside—walking outdoors, whether around my neighborhood or in a local forest preserve, often helps me see things in a different light.
* I journal with pen and paper. If I’m having trouble getting inside a character, writing a journal entry from their point of view can provide fresh insights.
* I “sleep on it.” This may sound cliché, but if I’m struggling with a problem, whether in my life or in a piece of writing, getting a good night’s sleep often leads to the solution.
